CHOSEN CONCEPT
STORY:

I live at Katendrecht, which when I say that most people immediately think of prostitution. To me that is very unfair considering during that same time the biggest Chinese community in Europe was located in the same area. By outsiders they have always been overshadowed seeing prostitution is better known.
I wanted to create an ode to this community that were still a huge part of Katendrecht during the 1930's.
I looked up traditional Chinese vases, which to me represents them very well. Not only that but I also love the shapes.
I have found some interesting personal stories of that community in Katendrecht and wanted to create a snapshot out of the story to really represent that Chinese population specifically. That snapshot I plan to portray onto the vase to share their story.

Ming pillows

Possible embroider stories
Also: During the 15th century China was ruled by the "Ming Dynasty". They evolved a lot in ceramics and created new and better techniques. They really made the Ming vases one of China's cultural trademarks.
Chinese medicine care and research a lot about health and aging. They have a fear of nothing being permanent and everything ending at some point. China has an interesting "pillow history". They researched on how to get the best night sleep and on how to become as old as possible. People used too sleep on wooden or bronze "pillows" thinking it would help or even sleep on ceramic pillows thinking the cold would make them become older. On the other side some people preferred comfortable pillows so it really depends on their believes.
The ideal pillow type has changed over time from hard and cold ceramic pillows to soft pillows for a pleasant and dreamy sleep.

"Unbreakable" stands for the fact that this product is an unbreakable ming vase but also that even though every trace of the Chinese community has disappeared from Katendrecht, history isn't breakable and they were still and will always be a huge part of Katendrecht's history
